Hi everyone! Is been a long time since I last posted a blog. I have just been busy lately because of our midterm examination week. Hope you miss me because I do. Okay, so for this blog, I just answer some frequently asked questions about tourism management and it also may help those incoming students of this course and those students that think if they pursue this course but confuse with these questions.

Before we start, let me introduced myself better. I am Nhelmar Atienza and a third-year student in a State university here in the Philippines. So let's now start answering your questions.

Is there a Math subject in Tourism Management?

Yes there is, of course, and I think a lot of courses have it too. At first honestly, I really thought so too that there is no math subject in tourism but I am wrong. It has, but it is just basic Math such as Basic Accounting, Business Finance, Business Marketing, Mathematics in Modern World. These are the expected subjects you will take for 1st and 2nd year but is all basic…. I think for those who love Math but of course, for us who didn’t, it is hard.

Is it expensive?

Yes it is, but for me who studied this for three years now, I didn’t feel that it is expensive, I think it is based on the college or state university that you are in or it is because in the Philippines, tuition fees are now free so it is a lot of big help too. And I think I will feel this when I am in my 4th year because I will surely take OJT that year which is this year.

Does this course have a research or thesis subject?

Yes, it has. Actually last year, 2nd semester we are just finishing our research subject and I think at my 4th year, we will be having a case study or thesis, I dunno at the moment. But all I just can say is it is hard taking research in today’s era because we are facing a pandemic and interviewing people online is not easy or finding those respondents are not easy so I wish and pray that this pandemic will soon end.

Can you enroll in this course even if you have a different strand?

Yes and actually I don’t know that the perfect strand for this course is ABM and when I was in senior high school, I take the GAS strand because I am undecided to which course I will be taking at that time but I am thinking to be a stylist that time because that is what I love. Going back to the topic, I was accepted in this State University I am in right now even if I am graduated SHS GAS strand.

Is there a height requirement?

No, there is not. There is no height requirement or physical attributes or appearance in taking this course. If you really want to take this course go on and take it. You are all welcome in this course. And I think why people thinking that there is a height requirement needed in this course because if you will take Tourism Management it will lead you to be being a flight stewardess or flight attendant in the near future and being F.A. requires physical appearance and attributes depends on the company you are applying but for now, you are a student so you didn’t need to worry about any of physical requirements.

Can you apply to a hotel?

Yes, you can. You can do your OJT’s in hotels as a Front desk attendant because you will also be having a front desk demo or subject and vice-versa in the hospitality industry. If you graduated in the hospitality industry, you can also apply as an F.A.

Is it okay for the boys to have long hair?

In our school, is it not okay because when you are enrolling in this industry you need to be prim and proper and neat as always because you are a trainee on giving services to other people and we will meet a lot of people so we need to be professional as always.

Do you have to be great at English?

I think you don’t need to be great in English but you need to know how to speak English because we will meet a lot of people and not all of our guests knows how to speak Tagalog or our primary language or dialect so we need to learn how to speak English. And don’t worry because, why we study is to learn and in this industry, we will learn how to speak English. It is okay to learn slowly at least you improve.

Do you need to have a good set of teeth?

I just answered it at question five but I repeat, there are not physical features or requirements in Tourism Management. These physical requirements are just needed when you apply for a job at airlines or whatever company that needed these requirement.

What is the difference between Tourism and Hospitality Management?

Tourism management focuses on tourist development, travel industry management, tourism marketing, and tourism services, while hospitality management focuses on all areas of hospitality operations such as hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, amusement parks, country clubs, and convention centers but in tourism, you can apply on different jobs in the industry of tourism and hospitality you can work on different transportations on land, air and water. You can work on cruise, hotels, casinos and many more.

Is it difficult?

I believe that every course are difficult. It is on you on how you will handle this difficulty and I also believe that if you enjoy and you are happy with what you are doing, even if it is so hard and difficult, you can manage and handle it well and also and I know that you will learn how to handle and manage this difficulty because it is one of the learnings you will get in taking up this course. Because, it will, really, challenge you…

Why you choose Tourism?

Honestly, it is not what I wanted. I just stated it earlier that I want to become a stylist because I love mix-matching clothes and I think that being a stylist is a path destined for me, so when I enroll in this State University, I am looking for a course that is perfect on the job I wanted, but unfortunately, I didn’t see anything. All I can see was my friends are choosing BS Tourism Management because they want to become an FA and because I didn’t see anything that is perfect on what I wanted, they suggested to me that I enroll for BS Tourism Management instead so that we will be on the same courses because if I really choose what I wanted, I will be alone and I don’t want to be alone so the scam me. Just kidding. The funny thing is when the University posted the students who passed, many of my friends didn’t pass and I am one of my circle of friends that passed and I am shocked that that day will happen. There is a lot of exams needed before you will be a real student of that university and the last exam before you will be passed and be called a student of that university was an interview and after that interview, I didn’t expect to pass because you need to speak in English and my English that time is so, so bad. So I just tell to my whole family that I think I didn’t pass this time ad actually they find backers for me if I didn’t pass and when the day came, I was shocked because I passed. I laughed so hard because I didn’t expect anything. When I said it to my parents they said that they expected that I will pass and they are so happy.

God really planned everything, He knows that what I wanted Is not the right path for me, because if it is, He will find a way for me to be on that path but it isn’t because the more that you don’t want the path that God gives you, the more He will lead you there and letting you realized that the path you want will break your heart. That day, I am really really sad because that is not what I wanted and I didn’t understand why God always finds a way on leading me to this path, and every day, I realized and appreciate what God plans for me. So if God finds a way to lead you to the path you do not want, trust Him because the path you want is not the right path. See you next time!
